Martin O'neill

After looking at Martin O'neill's work I decided to have a closer look at a few of his pieces, the first being this image of a man on what looks like the start of a blueprint drawing walking past this spiky floating object. The male seems to be ignoring the object which makes this image look rather strange. The original image is made up of different pieces of material giving a very layered, textured effect. The background of this image adds depth as it also carried its own texture. What I like about this image is that it isn't obvious, each person viewing this will come up with their own ideas of what is going on, and it will spark an emotion into one person which may well be the oposite another is feeling. This kind of power and diversity makes this image very eye catching. The large dangerous shaped object could be either floating like a balloon or dangling over the mans head in a threatening way. The colours used give this image a fun, lively, friendly feel, it looks quite feminine with the pinks and floral pattens, however the image as a whole is not tied down to a particular sex. I am planning on creating something as visually interesting as this image and am going to look into using some of the beautiful pattens and textures Martin O'neill has used in this piece.

This image again has a fantastic texture in the background, although it is a lot more subtle than in the image above. This image is a lot busier than the first as there are many elements to it. The general feel of this image is very happy, summer and of course like it says "freedom", this image has a very retro, vintage style and has a great use of different colours and angles. The image is almost split across the centre line by a rainbow but the two sides are held together by the main figure of the woman, this sets the scene for a happy summer feel and is quickly backed up by the images of beach balls and sun glasses. What I really love about this image is how "homemade" and cut and stick it is. Its the sort of thing you could make with old photographs at home or clippings from a magazine, this is a very appealing idea and it has got me thinking about having an image as a poster which looks like it has been stuck together with tape and glue.

Below you can see my favourite piece of typography made by Martin O'neill called "gifted fidget". This piece is lovely to look at, its easy to read while being interesting, textured and colourful. It isn't over the top and in your face, its very elegant and pretty. Having all of the colour and pattern inside of the letters to make it look as if they have been cut out and placed over the top like a stencil is a great idea which I would love to experiment with in my ideas.
